The Housemaid: A Delightfully Twisted Game of Deceit, Obsession, and Consequences

Cinema is a privilege, and while I went with modest expectations, ‘The Housemaid’ is as advertised: a gripping and playful thriller from director Paul Feig that grabs you by the throat from the opening scene and refuses to let go.

The film centers on Millie, a young woman desperate for a clean slate who lands the opportunity of a lifetime: a position as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Winchesters. However, she quickly learns that within the walls of their perfect estate, nothing is ever as it seems. The premise might seem simple, but the way everything escalates and ties together is fantastic.

The chemistry between the film’s cast is undeniable, yet it’s the strength of their individual performances that truly delivers the goods. Sydney Sweeney has drawn major flak for being “one-dimensional,” and while she does bring her trademark sultry allure many believe has been relied upon too heavily, she delivers a gritty performance that proves she is far more versatile than the critics give her credit for.

Brandon Sklenar’s Andrew is magnetic, but he is certainly no saint. However, the film’s true highlight is Amanda Seyfried’s show-stealing performance. It’s evident she poured her whole heart into the role of Nina, absolutely devouring every scene with the kind of manic brilliance we’ve adored since her iconic stint in Mean Girls.

The film also thrives with a tense third act that delivers exactly the kind of unhinged, ‘cat-and-mouse’ payoff that makes the genre so addictive.

As far as popcorn thrillers go, ‘The Housemaid’ is a masterclass in suspense that will leave you on the edge of your seat. I left the theater wanting more, and boy, I’m glad a sequel is on its way.

The Housemaid is now showing in PH cinemas! Massive thanks to Pioneer Movie Hub, Viewers’ Choice PH, and Ayala Malls Cinema for the advance screening passes!
