‘ETERNITY’: Enduring Love vs. Nostalgic Ideal

Rom-coms are deceptively difficult to execute, thanks to the genre’s formulaic nature, but I can safely say that A24’s Eternity succeeds in redefining it and has easily become one of my favorite film releases this year. The David Freyne-directed flick offers an imaginative take on love and loss that left me utterly captivated.

Eternity pits enduring love against the nostalgic ideal. Set in the Junction, aka the afterlife, Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) faces a difficult choice: which of her dead husbands, Luke (Callum Turner) or Larry (Miles Teller), deserves to spend eternity with her? The choice seems easy in theory, but the film makes it much more complex. Though often fun and chaotic, the film’s core is deeply sentimental.

The cast is an absolute joy to watch, thanks to their undeniable magnetic chemistry. Olsen delivers an infectious and energetic performance that showcases her impeccable comedic chops (and yes, this is the dreamiest she’s ever looked in a project!).

The male leads are just as strong: Teller is the ideal rom-com lead, embodying the kind of hopeless romantic the audience roots for, and Turner, not to be outdone, holds his own as the perfect *wink wink* opposition. Meanwhile, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early are riotously, laugh-out-loud funny as the afterlife coordinators.

The vibrant production design is a major highlight, creating an inviting atmosphere that transports viewers to a unique, spellbinding realm—it’s simply a feast for the eyes overall.

Ultimately, Eternity drives home the crucial point that it’s not the path you’re given, but the decision you make that matters. This absolute crowd-pleaser wastes no time drawing you in, making it the perfect date-night movie.

Eternity is now playing in Philippine cinemas. Big thanks to Pioneer Movie Hub, Viewers’ Choice Philippines, and SM Cinemas for having me!
