‘SUPERMAN’: Hope Renewed and Faith Restored in the New DCU

So, embargo’s officially lifted and I’ve been itching to talk about Big Blue. Here’s what I thought about DC Studios’ Superman.

I’ll start by saying this: Believe the hype because James Gunn absolutely knocked this one out of the park!

Superman is a well-balanced comic book flick that is big on heart and theatrics with just the right amount of camp. It isn’t afraid to be lighthearted and silly.

But it’s more than just your regular superhero film. Superman also manages to convey a strong and timely socio-political message without being too preachy, and given the current climate, it just hits all the right notes.

David Corenswet is SUPERMAN. He delivers an awe-inspiring portrayal of the Man of Steel that’s a far cry from anything we’ve seen in the last 20 years. Gone are the days when Supes felt robotic and seemingly out of reach. Corenswet is effortlessly charismatic and relatable.

His chemistry with Rachel Brosnahan, who pulls off an exceptional Lois Lane, is off the charts great. Big fan of their pairing!

Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is already up there as one of comic book cinema’s most despicable villains. A true mental mastermind, his version of Lex is as cold and calculating as they come.

The supporting cast also makes the film, with scene-stealing performances by Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen) and Edi Gathegi (Mr. Terrific). Putting together a huge ensemble of characters in a 2-hour film may have sounded way too ambitious, especially for a debut film, but Gunn miraculously nailed it without the story becoming clunky and convoluted.

The pacing may put some people off, but I personally liked it. It’s pretty much an episode of Superman: The Animated Series on steroids, and boy, every bit of it was delightful.

It’s hard not to get anxious considering the “old” DC’s notorious track record, but in the end, Superman completely erased my fears.

I understand the skeptics cause we’ve been fed mediocrity and inconsistency over the last decade but man, this film will make you believe in the new DCU.

Talk about setting a great first impression. I’m ready for more!

Hope renewed. Faith restored. Superman is showing in Philippine cinemas starting today!

P.S. KRYPTO BEST BOY!
